There's no good way to look at this…
Here’s a scary story from the New York Daily News that’s been picked up by Salon’s Five Things.
It reports how a previously unacknowledged earthquake threat to New York City has been discovered.
But wait, there’s more. And it’s even worse news.
The Indian Point nuclear power plant, in upstate New York, is sitting right on top of an earthquake hotspot:
Scientists’ quake-up call for city
Columbia University seismologists have uncovered a pattern of subtle but active faults that they say could spawn a cataclysmic quake right here [in New York City].
But the news was even scarier for the 300,000 people who live within 10 miles of the controversial Indian Point nuclear power plant in Westchester County, about 24 miles north of the city.
The scientists at Columbia’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory found that the plant sits astride a previously unidentified intersection of two active seismic zones, putting it at highest risk for earthquake disaster.
“It sits on the bull’s-eye,” said Lynn Sykes, lead author of the paper, which was published in the current issue of the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.
He noted that even a relatively mild temblor would damage “a lot of items in the plant, including critical components.” Read full story here…
