Last and longest journey
Incredible pictures from the New York Times this morning show the city’s unwanted Redbird subway cars being towed off the coast of Delaware where they will be dumped into the Atlantic Ocean to form an artificial reef.
The caption to one reads: “Once submerged, the subway cars turn a barren stretch of ocean floor into a bountiful oasis, carpeted in sea grasses, walled thick with blue mussels and sponges, and teeming with black sea bass and tautog.”
The move is opposed by one environmental group because there is a quantity of asbestos in the cars – but the authorities say it will not pose a danger either to humans or to marine life.
